We have all dwelled in darkness. We have all found comfort in the darkness. The darkness is familiar. The darkness is cozy. The darkness is where we are at home because the darkness — life without the Inner Light; life without God — is where we all begin our journey of awakening to the Light.

Many of us will stay in the darkness. Many of us will only see our Inner Light, our spark of the divine, as a glimmer on the horizon. A flickering candle we can see, but never touch. A glow that we can never bask in. A warmth that we will never feel.

Those of us who are called to Quakerism are those who have seen the Light. We have felt the warmth, perhaps fleetingly, and we long to feel it again.

Through cultivation of Spirit, through contemplative, silent worship, we can feel the Light. We can bask in the warmth more frequently. And, over time, we can bask in the warmth more regularly.

But we are the blessed ones. Not all whom we encounter will be so fortunate. How can we — without proselytising — help our Brothers and Sisters in Christ connect with their inner divinity?
